About Motlow Creek Ranch and Cider Company
Humble Beginnings for Motlow Creek Ranch and Cider Company
Motlow Creek Ranch and Cider Company (MCRC), Inc. began in 2017 when local entrepreneur John Macomson decided to bring two passions together—ranching and craft cider. By 2019, he opened the ranch to the public.
But the story started much earlier. In 2004, John began raising cattle, driven by his love for the land and a commitment to sustainable agriculture. As the years passed, he discovered a new interest: small-batch cider. He quickly saw the potential to blend his agricultural roots with this new craft. That vision led to the creation of the Fat Ass Heifer Cidery—a name as bold and unfiltered as the cider itself.
Located in the scenic South Carolina countryside, Motlow Creek Ranch is more than just a cidery. It’s a working farm and a place built on hard work, Southern humor, and a whole lot of heart.
Today, the cidery produces bold, flavorful ciders using traditional fermentation methods and high-quality ingredients. Every batch reflects the soul of the South and the hands that make it.
Alongside MCRC, John continues to run Carolina Software as a Service, Inc., the tech company he founded in the late 1990s. Balancing agriculture and technology might seem unexpected, but for John, it’s a natural fit—and a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit.
Motlow Creek remains a family-run start-up. A tight-knit team of friends and relatives—including John’s wife, Denise—help bring the vision to life. Together, they’re building a place that offers more than great cider. They’re creating a local experience with real charm and character.
So whether you’re stopping by for a tasting, a tour, or just to say hello to the cows, you’re always welcome here.
